Tuesday January 22nd

Today was my first may in Mr. Trujillo's’ (Mr. T)6th grade math classroom. Today, I introduced myself to the classroom and then the students were taught a lesson on adding and subtracting integers. On the previous Friday, Mr. T was not here and the students turned in a worksheet on what they can know about what the lesson they were taught beforehand. Mr T. and the students took notes today and went over a few examples.

Friday January 24th

Today, students were given a set of somewhat difficult warm up practice problems to begin class. In both of his classes that I observed, the 5 examples that they were given took the entire hour as a majority of the students were confused. What Mr. T did was use chips to show how the problems were done.

Tuesday January 29th

Today in class, students completed a review activity for their upcoming test that would happen on this upcoming Friday. Students were given 10 stations around the room that they had to go to and they had to complete the problem at that station.

Friday February 1st

Today, Mr. T was absent because he had a meeting today. The substitute teacher gave the students their test and if the students did not complete it at the end of the hour, they would have to turn it in no matter what. I handed out the tests to the students and also the students gave me their tests when they were finished with them.

Tuesday February 4th

Today, the Kids got back the tests in class today and went over the tests for a majority of the time today because many of the students did not do that well on the test. Mr. T did a great job of explaining the problems and working them out so that the students know what they did wrong.

Friday February 8th

Today the students learned a new Unit that would last for about a month and a half on Area, Volume, Surface Area of shapes and Prisms.

Tuesday February 12th

Today the students took notes over the different characteristics of shapes and also learned how the surface area and volume formulas were derived.

Wednesday February 13th

Today the Students did group work on finding the surface area and volume of a rectangular prism. They also when they were done went together as a class to discuss answers and ask any question that they had on the worksheet.

Wednesday February 20th

Today, Mr. T announced that the students would have a group project over surface area and volume and the students were then separated into groups of about 3 or 4 students. He also announced that this project would take until spring break to complete and they would work on it in class for the next few weeks.

Friday February 22nd, Tuesday February 26th, Friday March 1st, Tuesday March 4th, Wednesday March 5th

These days while I was here for my Internship, the students worked on their group projects. The students in the group were given 1 shape or prism and had to explain how each of the formulas for surface area, volume, and area were derived. They also constructed home made objects and had to find the surface area, volume, and area of the objects.

Spring Break

Tuesday April 2nd, Wednesday April 3rd, Friday April 5th

I have not been in the class for a period of time because of Spring Break and for the first few weeks back Dr. Fry wanted us to be in the class. Today, I was informed that I would have the opportunity to teach a few lessons with Mr. T for my remaining time at Harmony Middle School. During these dates, the students worked on a large review packet that they would have a test over on the following Monday, April 8th. I helped out the students who needed help with the packet and along with Mr T., walked around the classroom to get of feel of how the students were doing and feeling and helped them out if they needed help or had questions.

Tuesday April 9th

Today the students began a new until on decimals and percents. What was challenging for the students is that they would not be able go use a calculator during this until to find percentages. Even for me, that would be a challenge. Today, the students were introduced on how to find percentages of certain numbers and had to use multiplication and long division to find their answers.

Wednesday April 10th

Today the students took notes on how to find percentages and totals of discounted items at a store. The students, for example, had to find the original price of an item if it was a certain percent off, what the new price of a item was if it was on sale for a discount. Students also learned how to apply tax to items using 8 cent tax for every dollar.

Friday April 12th

Today the students had a jeopardy review game in class to learn and practice how to use decimals and percents to find the total costs of items.
